After all the buildup and excitement, the Simpson Cup officially got under way on Sunday evening during a spectacular Opening Ceremony at the iconic Baltusrol Golf Club. For an event celebrating its 10th anniversary, these memorable scenes in the late New Jersey sunshine really were befitting of the occasion.

Players, sponsors, staff and the rest of the watching audience were treated to a marching of the color guards, with a bag pipe accompaniment. The players then rose for the customary national anthems, before being introduced by their respective captains. Finally, it was left to tournament founder John Simpson MBE to reflect on an incredible decade of growth and development, before declaring the tournament officially open.

Once the formalities were complete, guests were moved to a plush Gala Dinner, which included some exemplary cuisine, coupled with a fireside chat between the captains. Although mostly light-hearted, their insights and stories nonetheless made for fascinating listening, and captivated the audience.

There was also a silent auction to raise funds for the charity, which is in addition to the incredible generosity already shown by our sponsors. And of course, there was the visible camaraderie between the players, as friends from both sides of the pond reunited and reminisced - epitomising what the Simpson Cup is all about.

It’s taken an enormous amount of work to get this event off the ground, and there are so many people to thank for their efforts. Ultimately it’s all come together, and we’ve got a tremendous week ahead.

Tomorrow is the traditional Player/Sponsor Day, with a shotgun start at 9am on the Lower Course. Thereafter, a lunch and prize giving for the players, followed by team photographs. And of course, the announcement of the pairings as the tournament-proper kicks off on Tuesday with the Fourball matches (8am start on the Upper Course).

Proceedings then conclude on Wednesday following the Singles matches (also 8am start, back on the Lower Course). So, who will it be to lift the Cup? The defending champions, Team USA, boast a formidable record on home turf. But Team GB have a few fresh faces, and, with a practice round under their belts, will be determined to regain the trophy they last won at the Home of Golf in 2019.

Whoever emerges victorious, all players and attendees will undoubtedly leave Baltusrol feeling inspired, with a first-hand view of individuals overcoming the ultimate challenge. And it is in this spirit, in a special anniversary year, that the 2022 Simpson Cup has all the makings of the best one yet.
