A preview of the 2022 Simpson Cup
With not long to go until lift off at Baltusrol Golf Club, we preview the 10th Simpson Cup.

What a journey it's been. Ten fantastic years of the Simpson Cup, and the event continues to grow. Having graced some of the finest golf courses either side of the Atlantic over the past decade, the Simpson Cup rolls into Springfield (NJ) from August 28-31 to mark the 10th anniversary of the annual showpiece.

Armed with not one, but two world-class golf courses, Baltusrol GC is no stranger to championship golf. With a rich heritage that dates back to 1895, the Club has hosted 17 major championships in its fabled history, including seven U.S. Opens, two U.S. Women’s Opens, and two PGA Championships. It will return to the global stage again in 2023 when the Lower plays host to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and also the 2029 Men's PGA Championship.

But, before all that, there's the significant matter of the Simpson Cup to take care of, and the players will arrive with the series delectably poised at 5-4 to the Americans. Incidentally, both history and the form book paint a positive picture for the host nation.

The Americans haven't been beaten on their home turf since the inaugural event at TPC Sawgrass in 2012, and have also lost just once since 2015. The Brits will also be taking a slightly inexperienced team, with a total of six rookies among them.

But the visitors will have omens of their own to boost optimism. For starters, it was none other than this year's captain Dave Ward who led them to victory at Sawgrass a decade ago. The 57-year old is one of just two remaining Simpson Cup ever-presents, and he'll bring a wealth of experience to the table as his team fight tooth and nail to wrestle the trophy back.

USA captain Marty Caraway will have something to say about that though. The Marylander has an impressive record of his own since making his debut at The Maidstone Club in 2018, and he leads a team with a solid mix of experience and youth - not to mention talent, too.

It has all the makings of another tasty showdown, at a venue whose esteem is truly befitting of the occasion. And it all gets under way with the Opening Ceremony on Sunday August 28. The following day sees the traditional Player/Sponsor Golf Day, before the event proper kicks off on Tuesday August 30 with the usual six fourball matches (betterball matchplay - one point per match).

Proceedings will then be rounded off on the Wednesday with 13 singles matches (matchplay - one point per match), before the winning skipper is presented with the newly-named Ben Simpson Trophy (in honor of founder John Simpson's son, who sadly passed away earlier this year).

For Caraway and Co., a mere 9.5 points to retain it, while for Ward and his charges, the magic number is 10. The excitement levels are already reaching fever pitch...not long to go!
