Todd Tongue ready to lead Team USA into battle
In his fifth Simpson Cup appearance, Tongue is given the honor of captaining Team USA. Here, we find out a bit more about the man from Rochester, NY.

As the Simpson Cup returns to American soil in October, the host nation will be eager to regain the trophy they surrendered at St Andrews Links back in 2019. And, having now assembled a formidable-looking team, they've opted for an experienced head to lead them into battle, with Todd Tongue taking the reins.

The Rochester native, who made his Simpson Cup debut five years ago in his hometown at Oak Hill CC, has long since demonstrated his ability and skill, boasting an impressive 4-2-2 record in the Simpson Cup. But taking on the role of captain presents an altogether-new challenge, and it's one that Tongue will relish when the two sides arrive at The Creek in six weeks' time.

"Words cannot express how honored and grateful I am that John Simpson and the committee selected me to lead Team USA this year," the 52-year old said. "This competition means so much to us veterans, and this year promises to be something extra special, given the venue, and also the fact that it so closely follows the Ryder Cup.

"We see how pumped those guys are when they play for their country, and for us it's exactly the same. This year, I get to be the guy at the wheel. As they say in my regiment, Rangers Lead The Way!"

Like every competitor at the Simpson Cup, Tongue suffered serious injuries during his years of service in the military. But, despite this, it's a time he remembers fondly - and his unfailing sense of humor shines through as strongly as ever.

"My father was in the Army, and, as long as I can remember, I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I enlisted in 1987 immediately after graduating and turning 18. The majority of my 12.5 years of service was with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

"That all came to an end eventually. I sustained a left-shoulder gunshot wound - I jumped when I should have ducked. Then came a gunshot wound to the right hand - I ducked when I should have jumped. Clearly, I’m not a quick learner!" he says with a wry smile.

Following his retirement from the military, Tongue slowly settled back into civilian life. It hasn't always been an easy ride, but, in 2014, he came across the On Course Foundation as Oak Hill began its preparations for hosting the 2016 showpiece. And it's fair to say Tongue's affiliation with the charity has deepened ever since.

"Being involved with the On Course Foundation is wonderful. As members, we are always looking for ways to improve what we do and find more locations to assist our fellow veterans with recovery and employment. Because it’s such a great organization, I am constantly promoting it to everyone I meet."

He continued: "Every member of OCF is at a different stage in their recovery process. Be it mental, emotional or physical. I believe it is my responsibility to motivate them in any way possible to continue on that path and never quit."

The pinnacle of OCF membership is, of course, the Simpson Cup, and when I asked Tongue what his favorite memory from his four previous appearances was, the response sums up what makes it such a unique event.

"That’s a difficult one because there are so many. I would have to say my favorite time was during the 2016 Simpson Cup at Oak Hill CC. After each day's play, both Team USA and Team GB socialized for hours on end.

"Having the opportunity to talk to everyone and get to know them on a personal level is something I feel is extremely important when trying to build camaraderie within the organization. I consider some of those Team GB members my best friends," he added.

Camaraderie. It's a word synonymous with the Simpson Cup, and the transatlantic bonds between these players is palpable each time they come together.

But that doesn't detract from the fiercely-competitive nature of the week's proceedings, and, with the series currently deadlocked at 4-4, both teams will be more determined than ever to make 2021 a winning year. And on this, Tongue makes no apologies for his confidence in predicting the scoreline at The Creek.

"Team USA to win it by 13-5," he declares with a grin. "The trophy is coming back home this year, and that's just the way it is."
